Ion exchange resins are a critical part of Dubai’s comprehensive water purification infrastructure. These specially formulated porous polymers remove unwanted dissolved ions from raw water sources through an ion exchange reaction.
In Dubai, ion exchange is primarily used in domestic and commercial water softening systems. The emirate receives water transported hundreds of miles that still contains hardness-causing calcium and magnesium ions after desalination and reverse osmosis treatment.
Ion exchange resins act as tiny molecular sieves. They are usually sphere-shaped beads containing immobilized ionic groups with a fixed electric charge. The resin used in Dubai has sodium ions attached.
As hard water passes through the resin bed, the calcium and magnesium cations in water are exchanged for sodium cations on the resin surface through electrostatic attraction. The water emerging is softened and free of hardness ions.
This process continues until all exchange sites on the resin are occupied by calcium and magnesium. At this point, the resin bed must be regenerated by flushing it with a brine solution of sodium chloride, replenishing sodium ions.
